All of us possess things which are associated with our memories from the past. With time, these become treasures for us that we don’t want to part with.
One evening I received a call from Ms. Deepika which went along the lines of,
“I have an old saree from my wedding gifts that I don’t want to part with. I would wish to wear it at one of the family functions. Please suggest how to transform this saree.” This was the beginning of a new creation. I checked from her whether she wanted to wear the saree or we create something new from it. She preferred to wear this in a different form and not as a routine saree.
Now the responsibility was mine to start the thinking process. I received her beautiful pink saree which was woven with silver and light gold threads. My thoughts started pacing across the wide range of options to retain her love for her saree which included indo-western dress, salwar suit, shirt with a straight paint, sharara and lehenga choli. We discussed and finally decided for lehenga choli as she agreed to my suggestion of converting the saree into this festive garment .
I decided to use the saree as a fabric which will give the garment a fresh new look at the same time it had to be absolutely different from its original form. We removed the fall and got it dry cleaned. The borders and pallu were removed. Now I had a fabric to work on. I designed the flared skirt to preserve the original saree. Now was the turn for detailing the design for choli/blouse. I wanted to give a royal look and for that I picked up the fabric for the blouse with a matching design and got it dyed to match the shade. I needed accessories to enhance the looks for which I spent some time looking around and was able to finally got the match. I searched around to find the right borders and laces colour to match it appropriately and different types of tassels to brighten up the garment. To complete look I took a little heavy work dupatta . When I showed Deepika the final outcome, she couldn’t believe her eyes and was extremely happy with it. And yes, I can’t forget to mention that she did get lot of appreciation at the wedding.
